'What a question!' - Carlo Ancelotti stunned as James Rodriguez Everton exit discussed

Former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti produced an animated response when asked if James Rodriguez was right to leave Goodison Park this summer.

Rodriguez signed for Qatari side Al-Rayyan in September after only one year at the club, having fallen out of favour following the arrival of Rafa Benitez.

It was Ancelotti who brought the Colombian midfielder to Merseyside on a two-year deal as the pair, who previously worked together at Real Madrid, were reunited.

Rodriguez boasted a respectable six goals and five assists during his one and only Premier League season with the Blues.

However, his departure seemed somewhat inevitable after Ancelotti re-joined Real and was replaced by Benitez.

Appearing as a guest on ESPN Fútbol Colombia, Ancelotti was asked whether Rodriguez made the correct call to leave the club and delivered an honest response.

“What a question!", exclaimed the Real Madrid boss.

"I don’t know. I think the important thing for him is to play, that he is well and that he can show his quality," he told ESPN via Gol Caracol.

Rodriguez's start to life in the Middle East has been fairly mixed since completing his free transfer to join Al-Rayyan.

The 30-year-old suffered a 3-0 defeat on his debut for the club, scored his first goal the following game, and was then sent off in his third appearance after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession towards the end of the match.
