'What a joke': Fans react as Leeds Festival headliners and first acts are announced

Yesterday evening the first announcement for Leeds Festival 2021 was made and the announcement included double the amount of headliners.

Instead of the usual three, organisers have arranged for six headline acts to play across two separate stages which, they promise, will mean zero headline clashes.

Announced as headliners were Liam Gallagher, Stormzy, Post Malone, Disclosure, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Queens of the Stone Age.

The first batch of non-headline acts were also announced yesterday and included the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Two Door Cinema Club, and Doja Cat.

Many fans took to social media to share their excitement at the new announcement, which includes two headliners that were originally due to appear this year - before covid spoiled the fun.

One fan said: "catfish, post malone, liam gallagher and lewis capaldi? bro im aready there #leedsfestival "

Another said: "So see you all at Leeds festival right? Wake me up in a years time please and thank you"

And one person said that the festival is more than just its headline acts, commenting: "You could go Leeds festival for the full 5 days and not even go the main stage once and you'll have a mint time, way more to that festival than who headlines it."

But many people have criticised the initial announcement for the lack of female talent being added to the bill.

"Reading & Leeds Festival have 6 headline slots...and they couldn’t give one to a female act", said one disappointed commenter.

Another said: "I just saw the Reading/Leeds festival line up and actually thought it was one of those spoof posters where they don’t add any of the female artists/bands...and then I realised it was genuine....f*****g hell what a joke"

One person asked: "How is not a single one of the reading and leeds festival headliners for next year female that’s so stupid actually"

And another person said that the lack of female headliners is telling of the "sexism in the music industry".

In fact, there has been such an uproar about the lack of female artists in this initial announcement that one disappointed fan even set up a petition, which called on the festival organisers to add more female artists to the lineup.

Milli Dalton, 20, said that she was encouraged to set up the petition after discussing the lack of female artists in Leeds' 2020 lineup, and noticing that they had not added any more in the initial 2021 announcement.

"After the amount of negative reception the previous lineup had over the lack of female artists included, I was quite surprised that there were still very few included in the initial [2021] announcement", Miss Dalton told LeedsLive .
