'What a first game!' - How the new boys did in Bristol City's win over Hallen AFC

Bristol City played almost three completely new teams against minnows Hallen on Saturday afternoon as Lee Johnson's side began their build-up to the new season.

That meant the full squad and plenty of young players all got a look-in.

We kept an eye on the new boys who we got to clock eyes on for the first time in the red - or black - shirt of the Robins. Plus one special youngster who appeared at senior level for a first outing.

From our place in the Frank Fairman Stand on a fine Bristol City Community Trust match day, these are our notes...

Sammie Szmodics

While Andi Weimann netted a hat-trick and could easily have been the man of the match, we rather think it may actually have been Sammie Szmodics.

Certainly the former Colchester United man was the name on everyone's lips after the match. He scored two goals and looked a class act throughout.

First, a dipping cross almost set up Weimann, before the goal of the game was netted: froma  full 30 yards out, Szmodics picked up a pass from Pack, looked up and deftly chipped opposition goalkeeper Josh Staworski. A really class piece of play from the new attacking midfielder, who played just behind Weimann to begin.

A second goal came minutes later as the 23-year-old burst down the right channel and drillled in at the near post. In between there were moments of ingenuity, industry and surefire promise that will have certainly whetted the appetite of the Robins faithful as pre-season begins. Chapeau.

Tommy Rowe

The new defender-midfielder played the first 30 minutes at left-back and may have been unlucky to have a penalty awarded against him in the first half.

Nevertheless the full-back put in a solid shift apart from that and helped Bristol City to smash in six goals during the period that he played in.

There's more to come from the utility man, we suspect.

Rene Gilmartin

Dan Bentley remained unused in the match but was present at the game. The new man from Brentford is likely to get game time in the near future alongside Niki Maenpaa, but Rene Gilmartin started against Hallen.

And the former Republic of Ireland U21 player didn't put a foot wrong, in a composed and commanding display.

Indeed, Gilmartin saved a penalty and then the follow-up header to keep a clean sheet in his first showing.

Barney Soady/Saikou Janneh/Sam Pearson

It was a fine outing from Barney Soady who was given his first taste of senior action, with Sam Pearson also coming off the bench late in the game too.

Academy player of the season from last year Soady - as chosen by Bristol City's academy staff - enjoyed a good tussle at left-back against opposite number Eddie Bamfo but Soady held his own.

We understand that young defender didn't find out he was playing until just an hour before the match, meaning unfortunately his father couldn't make late arrangements and get down to watch the match as the youngster lined up alongside £8m man Tomas Kalas in defence. There may be more opportunities in the future, however, with good potential shown.

Pearson showed good glimpses of potential late on too.

Meanwhile, former Torquay United striker Saikou Janneh also impressed, netting twice in the final 30 minute period to stake a claim for senior involvement.

His first goal was an opportunistic swivel in the box before a second explosion of predatory play in the box doubled his tally. He also helped set up Matty Taylor for a goal too, with good work out wide on City's right.
