What a difference a year makes: from record-breaking heatwave to dangerous flooding

From a record breaking heatwave to a deluge of flooding - the miserable weather battering Merseyside couldn't be more different to the glory of last June.

This time last year temperatures in Liverpool were hitting 30C on a regular basis and people were basking in the summer sun .

Across the region beaches were packed out, but the start to this year's summer couldn't be further from the glory of 2018.

Fast forward 12 months and this June it's considerably colder and wetter, making for a miserable British summer.

The Met Office  issued yellow weather alerts for today and tomorrow, warning that heavy downpours could cause flooding in certain parts of the country.

Conditions today became so dangerous with flood water that there have been multiple crashes on the region's roads, prompting a warming from Merseyside Police to drivers.

Train services across the region have also been affected with parts of the track needing to be pumped of excess water at Hooton , causing severe delays.

There have also been reports of flooding across parts of Wirral and St Helens.

Despite days of rain there is some good news with reports weather should return to some kind of normality for this time of year, with temperatures rising to around 17 to 18C by the weekend.

The heavy downpours left this month odds-on to be the wettest June on record.

The Environment Agency issued flood warnings and over 30 flood alerts - leaving this June odds-on to be the wettest on record.

The highest rainfall was recorded at Ham Hill, Kent, with 94mm falling in the 24 hours leading up to 7am yesterday.

This comfortably beat the average UK rainfall for June of 73.8mm.
