'What a beast' - Former Liverpool star Dejan Lovren swaps football for UFC and instantly regrets it

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has turned to a different sport than football this weekend - and it didn't go as well as he would have liked.

The former Reds centre-back left Anfield last summer, shortly after helping the club win the Premier League, to sign for Russian club Zenit St Petersburg.

With Zenit not having a game this weekend, Lovren decided to turn to a different past time as he took part in some MMA action alongside a former UFC star.

Lovren posted on his Instagram feed a video of himself with ex-UFC fighter Mirko Filipovic - known as Mirko Cro Cop - and he didn’t last too long before tapping out.

And the friendly spar, which saw Lovren thrown to the ground before eventually having to admit defeat against his compatriot, lasted 50 seconds in total.

"Had this morning a short training session against @crocop1009,” wrote Lovren.

"What a beast this man still is. Was a big pleasure Mirko. Thank you."

Filipovic is a man of many talents, having more than just a proven track record in MMA to show for his efforts.

The 46-year-old retired from mixed martial arts in 2019 after winning 38 of his 52 fights with the UFC, Pride, Bellator and Rizin promotions.

He also took part as an amateur boxer, a kick-boxer, as well as an MP in his homeland of Croatia.
