Whamageddon: The rules on how to avoid hearing Wham's Last Christmas throughout December

With less than a month to go until Christmas, the annual cannon of festive songs really is in full musical flow.

From Slade to Mariah Carey, the next few weeks are set to be filled full of Christmas songs waxing lyrical about the holidays.

While some do undoubtedly have their fans, by the time the big day comes, many will be sick to death of them.

One of those festive staples is Wham's ubiquitous holiday classic Last Christmas, renowned for being the best Christmas song that never made it to number one.

Which is what makes the globetrotting competition Whamageddon extra difficult. The quirkily named game is a contest where people attempt to avoid hearing the song throughout much of December.

To win the game, you're not allowed to hear the song from December 1 until midnight on Christmas Eve – and it's exactly as difficult as you might think, especially as there are a few rules, compiled below.

Whamageddon rules

The premise is simple: to win, go as long as possible without hearing Last Christmas during the festive season.

The game starts on December 1 and ends at midnight on Christmas Eve.

To make it a bit easier, the rules on the official website say only the original counts and cover versions are fine – meaning you can listen to them to your heart's content.

You're out as soon as you recognise the song. Losers must post the hashtag #whamageddon on social media to join the other fallen warriors in Whamhalla.

While the game's official rules call ask participants not to deliberately send the song to friends, people online have been turning it into an all-out war.
