Whaley Bridge: Police reassure residents after weather warnings spark fears of rising water levels

Work continues to shore up the dam at Toddbrook Reservoir near the village of Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire (Picture: PA)

Whaley Bridge residents have been given safety assurances by police after more weather warnings sparked fears of rising water levels.

Some 1,500 people living around the damaged Toddbrook Reservoir had been evacuated over concerns its dam could burst.

They were allowed home on Wednesday before a yellow weather warning from the Met Office, spanning much of the UK, brought the prospect of further heavy rain for the area on Friday.

Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Swann, from Derbyshire Police, said the force is now in a “much better position to react” if water reaches dangerous levels.

"The ongoing multi-agency work means that we are in a much better position to react to any risks from the dam and any rainfall that may cause local flooding,” she said.

Residents will be "first to know" if water "reaches a level of concern", the force said as the Canal and River Trust continued to monitor water levels.

A hub of local authorities and other organisations have also been set up at Whaley Bridge Primary School to offer support services.

An RAF Chinook helicopter dropped more than 500 tonnes of aggregate onto the dam to secure it.

The police’s assurances came before wet weather caused hazardous driving conditions in parts of the UK on Friday morning.

"There is some fairly heavy rain and thunderstorms from Bristol, up through Wales and into Northern Ireland," a spokesman for the Met Office said. "That will transfer eastwards over the next few hours, causing poor driving conditions in places."

Warnings for rain and wind came into force across nearly all of the UK on Friday as unseasonal weather caused widespread disruption.

Several festivals and events have been cancelled as forecasters warned of strong wind and heavy rain up and down the country.

Motorists and commuters have also been told to avoid travelling if possible.
