Whaley Bridge evacuation: Kindhearted strangers offer out their homes to help

Kindhearted strangers have taken to social media to offer help and support to those evacuated from their homes in Whaley Bridge.

It is thought around 2,000 people living in the lower valley area have been forced to flee over fears the dam wall at Toddbrook Reservoir could collapse.

Police have also tonight asked residents in a 'small number of properties' downstream, in New Mills and Furness Vale, to leave their homes.

Work to stabilise the collapsing dam wall at Toddbrook Reservoir is expected to continue throughout the night and over the weekend.

The Environment Agency earlier issued a severe 'danger to life' flood warning.

Businesses have been closed and roads leading in and out of the town have been shut, with officers standing guard.

Many of those evacuated are seeking shelter with friends and family, with some eagerly awaiting news at Chapel High School.

Already, people have started offering out their homes and services to help the families affected by the incident.

Annabelle Simpson-Grange tweeted: "If anyone needs a place to stay or help with pets please let me know.

"Also anyone needing help transport wise please get in touch.

"We're just down the road in Chapel-en-le-Frith, not far from Chapel High School."

Jane Lythe also posted: "If anyone needs a bed for the night or a lift or a cup of tea.

"My house is open for you. Stay safe everyone in Whaley Bridge."

Others are offering to help look for lost pets, as well as childcare services.
