Whales spotted frollicking in Scottish loch just 25 miles from Glasgow

Whales usually found in the north Atlantic have been spotted frollicking near a Royal Navy Trident nuclear weapons base.

Three northern bottlenose whales have been seen in Garelochhead, Argyll and Bute, where they have spent the past five days.

The deep sea creatures are usually found in deep water out at sea but have come inshore and many fear they are trapped in the Gare Loch close Faslane Naval Base.

"They are supposed to be in the north Atlantic, it is the fifth day they have been here now.

"There are academics studying them and Marine Life Rescue are here, in case they beach.

"They are around the Faslane Naval base, we are hoping they head down to the loch and disappear.

"It is a novelty. We live right on the shoreline, we don't usually see whales jumping around.

"It has attracted a bit of a crowd.

"It has been fantastic to see them, it is once in a lifetime.

The group, believed to be a mother and two calves, are being monitored be experts who are concerned for their welfare (DAILY RECORD)

"They are supposed to be out at sea, it's bizarre.

"There is nowhere for them to go.

"The scientists are outside my house, we are bringing them cups of tea.

"They are such deep sea divers, it is very unusual to have them so close to the shore.

"I think they came up the Clyde, past Greenock, and now they're in Garelochhead.

"There's a bit of concern that two of them are sick and are not going to make it.

"There are submarines at Faslane and they don't seem able to get out past the base again.

"I hope it doesn't turn into a sad sight on the beach."
