Whale washes up on North Wales beach

A whale has died after being washed up onto a North Wales beach.

The coastguard and British Divers Marine Life Rescue were called to Rhos-on-Sea earlier today after an animal became washed up onto the shore.

Initial reports suggested it was a dolphin but experts later confirmed it was a Sowerby's beaked whale.

North Wales Live reports the animal weighs around three quarters of a tonne.

It is believed to be female and 'not a full grown adult'.

The emergency services at the scene brought in trailers to attempt to move the whale so they could confirm what caused its death.

Traditionally deep water animals, the Sowerby's beaked whale would not be familiar with the Irish waters.

Sowerby's are rarely seen so close to the land edge as they favour offshore waters to the west of the UK and Ireland.

Rescue crews remained at the scene this evening to move the animal.
