Wexford's Michelle O'Neill to be official at Women's World Cup final

Michelle O'Neill will be an official at the Women's World Cup final on Sunday.

The Wexford native has been selected to officiate at the decider between the USA and the Netherlands in France.

O'Neill, 40,  is an official in the SSE Airtricity League and the So Hotels Women's National League.

Speaking before going to the tournament, she told FAI TV: "It's so exciting.

"To get one World Cup, but to come back and get a second, and to be more mature if you want to say. I'm a lot more relaxed, I know the work I've done over the last four years knowing that I need to be extra strong, extra fit, extra fast.

"Putting that into place four years ago and then getting the opportunities to have so much high quality matches here in Ireland - that's a huge boost for me. Four years ago there were 300 of us on the list for this tournament, and that's when the campaign started."

She added: "Now there's 47 of us going to the World Cup out of that huge amount. We have to very strong, very fast, very fit and in terms of my results, I would be in the top 5% at the World Cup this year, so I'm very, very happy with those stats.

"To be standing in the middle of it all, officiating it in front of 64,000 live spectators and millions across the world, I mean it's a huge, huge stage of women's football.

"I just want to go now, I'm super excited and it's a huge honour to be over there representing Ireland."
