Wexford hurling panel rocked by two Covid-19 cases ahead of Kilkenny clash

Two members of the Wexford hurling panel have tested positive for Covid-19 this week ahead of their clash with Kilkenny on Sunday.

County chairman Micheál Martin has confirmed that two players within the panel have tested positive for the virus, but Wexford remain hopeful the weekend's clash will go ahead.

Speaking to South East Radio, Martin said the county is working with relevant authorities to ensure the game can go ahead.

“We know at the moment that there are two players that have tested positive,” Martin said.

“I wouldn’t like to comment more for privacy of information (reasons) … but I don’t think we’re overly concerned beyond that at this present time.”

"We would imagine that the (Kilkenny) game will go ahead. Obviously we’ve to work through all the procedures.”

Davy Fitzgerald's charges have enjoyed an encouraging run since hurling's return earlier this month, they hit four goals in a comprehensive victory over Laois on the opening day.

And despite trailing Clare for much of their Allianz League clash last weekend, a late surge and a winning point from Rory O'Connor saw them claim two points from Cusack Park.

This weekend's clash was likely to prove a dress rehearsal for this summer's Leinster Championship, the Model men face Laois in the quarter-finals with the Cats awaiting the winner in the last four.
