Wexford hurling legend Michael ‘Art’ Foley dies in the US aged 90

Wexford GAA is in mourning following the death of legendary goalkeeper Art Foley.

Foley was between the posts for the most storied Wexford team of all that won All-Irelands in 1955 and ‘56, with the Enniscorthy man’s contribution to the latter success sealing his place in hurling folklore.

In that year’s All-Ireland final, he made a famous save from Cork’s Christy Ring, who was bidding for his ninth medal, which helped to turn the game in Wexford’s favour. Ring immediately congratulated Foley on the stop by shaking his hand and moments later Nicky Rackard goaled at the other end for Wexford.

A couple of years later, the St Aidan’s clubman emigrated to New York, where he lived the rest of his life to the age of 90.

Foley is the second member of that great Wexford team to pass this year following the death of Ned Wheeler in June.
