Wexford referees have agreed to fulfil fixtures this weekend after an emergency meeting with GAA chiefs at Wexford Park this evening.
The crisis meeting came after an alleged assault on a referee, which is being investigated by Gardai, and a number of other flashpoint incidents in Wexford in recent weeks.
Wexford chiefs have appealed for players, mentors, parents and supporters to “provide the deserved support to our referees and match officials.”
And Prior to all games for the remainder of this year, players, team mentors and referees will line up for a ‘Give Respect – Get Respect’ handshake prior to the game.
Wexford GAA have also agreed a series of initiative with referees.
All clubs have been ordered to hold a workshop for mentors from under-11 to adult before Wednesday October 5 to undergo a self-evaluation of their conduct towards match officials.
Clubs have been told to report to the County Executive the next day on who attended and any findings arising from the workshop or their fixtures will be postponed until the meeting takes place.
Wexford GAA will call for a Special Congress at the next meeting of the GAA’s Central Council.
This will seek to put in place the option of lifetime bans from the GAA for anyone who assaults a referee, and an overhaul of the GAA disciplinary system.
