Wetherspoons slashing drink prices to 99p throughout November

JD Wetherspoon has revealed that it will be slashing the prices of certain drinks in November, even though costs in the UK pub industry are increasing.

The pub giant will be charging just 99p for certain beverages in branches across Scotland and the UK next month.

As reported by the Daily Record, Greene King IPA, Beck's bottles and whiskey measures will all be available for under £1 when the promotion comes into effect on November 1.

Although Beck and Bells will also be available at a lower price next month, the real ale will cost slightly over £1 - £1.10 - because of minimum unit price restrictions.

The promotion lasts from next Monday all the way up to Tuesday November 30 - meaning the discounts are available across the entire month.

In addition, hot beverages will also be available for 99p, and will even still include free refills.

Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin said: “Our pubs are known for their excellent choice of drinks at value-for-money-prices at all times.

“Throughout November our customers will be able to choose from a great choice of drinks and save themselves some money too.”

The news of the price cuts comes amidst industry warnings that the price of pints will actually rise by 30p, due to shortages and a VAT cut taking its toll on spending.

The hospitality industry has been one of the industries most hit by the pandemic with pubs having to increase wages to fill the thousands of vacancies left by staff who did not come back after being furloughed.

More than eight in ten pubs say they have had to raise pay, despite struggling to access stock due to the HGV driver shortage.

Ed Bedington, editor of the trade journal Morning Advertiser, which carried out the price survey, said: "Price rises are rapidly becoming a major reality for operators that are already facing increases on a number of fronts, from the rise in the national living wage through to the increases in VAT and the threat of a return to the full horror that is business rates.

“We're facing a tsunami of increases on the horizon and it's going to be a real challenge for all."
