Wetherspoons pulls steak from all pubs across UK – on steak night

The Wetherspoons pub chain has been forced to apologise after steak was unavailable on its steak night.

Customers were forced to choose other options with chickereplacing steak in the mixed grill.

The Aberdeen Angus rump steak, Sirloin and gammon were all off the menu.

The chain's founder and chairman Tim Martin blamed a "product recall" for the lack of meat.

"Pretty rare, but does happen occasionally," he told the LBC radio station. "And I just don’t know.”

He added: “I’m  sure we’ll get it back on within a couple of days.”

In a separate statement Wetherspoons apologised to customers “for the inconvenience”, and said it "had a supply issue with our pubs."

Meat supplier, Russell Hume, told The Sun it had recalled the steaks as a “precautionary measure” due to mislabelling.

However, the company added that it had “no reason to believe the product was unsafe to eat”.

There were however reports of notices put up on bars suggesting the lack of steaks was due to “quality issues”.

News of the lack of steak was greeted with a mixture of bemusement and humour on social.

Former Big Brother contestant Ellie Young tweeted sad and tearful emojis after saying she went to the steak club only to discover to find out none were available.

Another Twitter user, Ian Heath, said: “No steak on ‘steak night’ at the Old Manor in Bracknell. What exactly is a ‘supplier failure’?”
