Wetherspoons pub puts two drink limit on parents with kids

A Wetherspoons pub has sparked debate after putting up a notice warning parents they can have only two alcoholic drinks if they have children with them.

A picture of the poster telling drinkers of the rule was posted on social media after an incident of "unruly behaviour" at the Robert Pocock pub in Gravesend, Kent, reports The Mirror.

The poster was put up last Sunday and has since been taken down, but a JD Wetherspoons spokeperson confirmed to the Liverpool ECHO that the nationwide policy has been in force for some years and still applies at the manager's discretion in all Wetherspoons pubs across the country.

He said: "This is not a new policy. We don't have signs up in our pub but it is at the manager's discretion whether they enforce this policy.

"We say that adults in charge of kids can have one alcoholic drink and another with a sit down meal. But it's up to parents to keep an eye on their kids and if they are being unruly and not being looked after than we have the right to refuse another drink."

The two-drink policy came to light after the landlady of the pub in Kent decided to make customers aware that as part of the pub's licensing it is their responsibility to ensure they are protecting children from harm.

The boozer said the policy had not been "followed rigorously" in the past but it would be taking the policy forward this year.

Being drunk while in charge of a child under the age of seven in a public place is illegal according to the 1902 licencing act and people can face a fine or even a month in prison in more severe cases.
