Wetherspoons pub closes ahead of Bristol City and Swansea match

A popular Wetherspoon's pub near Bristol's main train station will be shut ahead of the Bristol City and Swansea City clash today.

Avon and Somerset Police told football fans of the closure on Twitter on the same day they called for a "spirit of co-operation" between both sets of supporters.

The Knights Templar Public House on Templar Way will not open today (Saturday, September 21) for the match day.

Police said fans can head to the city centre and waterfront area for pre-game refreshment and food.

Police warn troublesome fans will be dealt with 'severely'

The large Wetherspoon's is situated close to Bristol Temple Meads and is on route from the railway station to South Bristol the location of Bristol City FC's home ground Ashton Gate Stadium.

Both sets of fans have been urged to "avoid trouble" having been told there won’t be a heavy-handed operation for the match

.

Swans fans have been asked to behave themselves and in return the police said they will not impose harsh restrictions on them as they travel to and from the game.

But police warned yesterday that those who cause problems would be dealt with severely - and even if they aren’t arrested on the day, they would be tracked down.

The message for this year's head-to-head follows last season's violence which took place before, during and after the match at Ashton Gate in February.

A total of 21 men from both Wales and the Bristol area were arrested, with 17 of those brought before the courts and six jailed in a series of court cases that continued into the summer.

Police are urging fans not to repeat those scenes, which included violence inside the ground, involving rival fans clashing with stewards and police, and each other, in the space between the Dolman Stand and the away Atyeo Stand, and disorder in Greville Smyth Park after the match.

The police said its operation would be ‘intelligence-led’. There is no plan for Swansea fans to be held inside the ground after the final whistle - although that could change and a decision would be made at the time.

Other than The Knights Templar being closed there are no 'bubble arrangements planned for Swans fans.

However, the force are reminding them that there is a special train back to Swansea which is leaving Temple Meads at 6.16pm.
