Wetherspoons has just slashed the price of beer - to promote Brexit

Britain's best-known pub chain has announced that it is cutting the price of beer by an average of 20p.

The pub is making its beer cheaper in what it says is a bid to show how leaving the Customs Union can reduce costs.

Chairman Tim Martin claims that leaving the Customs Union on October 31 will allow the government to end "protectionist tariffs" - something which he says would decrease how much we pay for drinks in pubs and shops.

The import tariff on wine from Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, North America and South Africa is set to fall to zero per cent in the result of a no-deal Brexit.

Speaking about the move, he said: "At the current time customers and businesses pay tariffs on thousands of products which are imported from outside the EU.

"These tariffs are collected by the UK Government and sent to Brussels. Provided we leave the customs union on October 31, the Government can end these protectionist tariffs, which will reduce prices in supermarkets and pubs.

"In order to illustrate this point, Wetherspoon has decided to reduce the price of Ruddles bitter, brewed by Greene King.

"A lot of politicians have misled the public by suggesting leaving the customs union would be a 'cliff edge' or 'disaster'.

"This is the reverse of the truth. Ending tariffs will reduce prices."

It's been reported that around 36 pubs will sell a pint for £1.39, while a further 160 will offer a pint for £1.59 or less. A whopping 600 pubs will sell a pint of Ruddles for £1.69.
