Wetherspoons Glasgow Central Station bar plans shelved as opening of The Dugald Drummond axed

The opening of a new Wetherspoons bar in Glasgow Central Station has been cancelled, the nationwide pub chain have confirmed.

Back in July 2018, we reported that Wetherspoons had been given the green light to open up in the former Central Bar on the second floor of the main station concourse.

Plans advanced to the stage that the new pub was even bestowed with the name The Dugald Drummond, in homage to the Ardrossan-born steam locomotive engineer and founder of the Glasgow Railway Engineering Company of the same name.

However, when Glasgow Live reached out for an update this week, a spokesperson advised us that Wetherspoons have pulled out of the project.

Planning approval for the pub was granted by Glasgow City Council in July 2018. In June 2019, licensing chiefs granted the application for a variation to the premises licence, which would enable the sale of alcohol at The Central Bar site.

This included altering the opening hours and capacity, with the new bar able to hold 226 people.

Archie MacIver, representing Wetherspoons, told the committee at the time a future bid to extend the capacity further may also be submitted.

Wetherspoons had been keen to add to their Glasgow city centre portfolio which includes the likes of The Counting House, The Hengler's Circus and The Crystal Palace.

“We have enjoyed great success in Glasgow and are keen to open one of our pubs at Glasgow Central,” Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said at the time.
