Wetherspoons given green light to open new pub in Shawlands

Glasgow City Council have given UK wide pub chain JD Wetherspoon permission to open up a new venue in the former Waverley Tea Room in Glasgow's southside.

Permission was granted yesterday (Thursday, January 23) by the council for the plans (submitted back in August), which will see the chain breathe new life into the historic building on Moss Side Road.

The Waverley Tea Room has lain empty since closing its doors back in September 2017, having served southsiders since 2006.

The planning application includes for a beer garden and roof terrace, with proposed opening hours of 7am to 00:30am (Sunday to Wednesday) and 7am to 01:30am (Thursday to Saturday).

The report also suggests that the conversion will create approximately 50 full and part time jobs.

Meanwhile, plans are afoot by the chain to open in Glasgow Central Station, with reports suggesting the new pub will be called The Dugald Drummond - named after the Ardrossan-born steam locomotive engineer.

The pub chain have 10 premises at present in Glasgow, including The Esquire House in Anniesland and The Counting House in George Square.
