Wetherspoons Cambridge has Super Saturday queue 'one hour long' as English pubs reopen

A huge queue has formed outside a Wetherspoons in Cambridge with punters apparently waiting for an hour to get inside.

Locals were pictured lining up outside The Regal, in Cambridge, this afternoon as boozers reopened across England today after three months of lockdown.

English pubs were allowed to reopen at 6am today on what is being called 'Super Saturday', although the authorities fear scenes of disorder worse than New Year's Eve.

One Twitter user who appeared to be celebrating 'Super Saturday' by going on a pub crawl around Cambridge tweeted a picture of the 'hour-long queue' outside The Regal.

They tweeted: " #PubDependenceDay #PubIndependenceDay #PubsReopening 6. Wetherspoons, Cambridge Queue an hour long apparently. Will find the next pub instead."

Police are concerned about youngsters 'over-doing' this evening it as they let loose after being cooped up indoors for three months.

Marc Jones, Lincolnshire’s Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think there will always be some over-doing going on and I don’t think tonight will be any different from any other Saturday night, sadly, in that regard.

“I do think there is an element of decompression going on, particularly with younger people who have had some very responsible parents keeping them in over recent weeks.”

Wetherspoons has set some strict rules ahead of the reopening of its pubs today.

The number of people allowed inside will be limited, punters will be asked to hand over their contact details when they enter and use hand sanitiser at the entrances and exits.

Customers are also being asked to use the firm's app to order food and drink - and pay with contactless cards.

Smoking directly outside the exits is also forbidden and children must be seated at all times

The Regal is the biggest pub in Cambridge, with room for 1,600 punters, and was the largest Wetherspoons venue when it opened in 2000.
