Wetherspoon to close Scottish boozers, find out if your local is affected

Pub chain Wetherspoon is to axe four of it's Scottish pubs .

The boozers in Lanarkshire, the Borders and Caithness are among 16 in the UK to be put up for sale.

The bars will continue to trade as usual until buyers are found, and the company hasn't confirmed if there has been any interest so far.

Bosses also failed to confirm why these particular venues have been singled out.

The Vulcan in Coatbridge , the Bourtree in Hawick, The Cross Keys in Peebles and Alexander Bain in Wick will likely be rebranded with new names and menus if they are taken over.

It is unclear what will happen to the pubs if buyers can't be found.

The news follows a string of closures on Scotland's high streets, including Mothercare, with Boots also announcing an overhaul of its branches this week.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of UK pubs has fallen by almost a quarter from 50,000 in 2008 to 39,000 in 2018.

Wetherspoon reported pre-tax profits of £50.3million for the six months to January 27 in its latest trading results.

The pub has also been calling time on European drinks for more than a year over its owner's hard-line stance on leaving the EU.

Boss - Tim Martin - has been sticking to a promise to sell more UK and non-EU brands as Britain prepares to break away.
