Wetherspoon to axe 16 UK pubs and Lloyds bars - check if your local is affected

One of Britain's most renowned pub chains has announced plans to axe 16 branches - in a move that will affect a number of local town centres and jobs.

JD Wetherspoon bosses have revealed they're calling time on 14 pubs across the UK - including two Lloyds No. 1 bars.

The list includes the Last Plantagenet in Leicester and Scotland to the Queens Hotel in Newport, Wales - with all branches now put up for sale in the hope of finding a buyer.

As it currently stands, all pubs are open for bids - and will continue trading as normal. However, if sold, they will mostly likely be rebranded with a new name, menu and prices.

Wetherspoon hasn't been able to confirm if it has any potential buyers lined up or why it's chosen to flog these 16 outlets.

Wetherspoons has cut all of these drinks from its menus because of Brexit

However, it follows a string of high street business that have introduced measures to sell off underperforming stores over the past year - including Boots which this week announced a huge overhaul of its branch network.

More than 11,000 pubs have closed in the UK in the past decade, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics – a fall of almost a quarter.

As of December 2018, there were around 39,000 pubs left down from about 50,000 in 2008.

Wetherspoon reported pre-tax profits of £50.3million for the six months to January 27 in its latest trading results , which it blamed on an increase in staff wages.

The pub has also been calling time on European drinks for more than a year over its owner's hard-line stance on leaving the EU.

Boss - Tim Martin - has been sticking to a promise to sell more UK and non-EU brands as Britain prepares to break away - Wetherspoons has cut all of these drinks from its menus because of Brexit.
