Wetherspoon shares update on plan for new pub in controversial Bristol location

JD Wetherspoon has said it is still "committed" to opening a new pub on Bristol's Gloucester Road as it awaits a decision from city planners.

It has been more than a year since the chain submitted revised plans to open a new pub along the Horfield stretch of the vibrant street, inside a boarded-up unit that has sat empty for years.

This is its sixth application since 2014 to turn the former supermarket into a pub, with various other versions either withdrawn or refused.

Bristol City Council is expected to make its decision soon on the latest proposal, which also includes an extension and the creation of a roof terrace.

If permission is granted, against some 200 public objections, the chain hopes to begin works next year.

A Wetherspoon spokesperson told Bristol Live: "We are committed to opening a pub on the site subject to the [planning and licensing] permissions.

"If we do get the go ahead then would aim to start work in 2022."

The disused unit is next to Betfred and a couple of doors down from the Co-op.

It is owned by Wetherspoon and according to planning documents, has been vacant for about 10 years.

Last summer a slew of strong-worded objections from neighbours were submitted during planning consultation, with one person raising concerns about attracting "alcohol fuelled football supporters" to the neighbourhood.

Others felt the chain pub will be out of place along Gloucester Road, which is famed for its offering of independent shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs, and raised concerns about diverting custom from some of those valued existing businesses.

Responding to those concerns back in August, Wetherspoon said its pubs around Bristol have an "excellent reputation" and the new premises would "create jobs and act as a catalyst for further investment" in the area.

According to the council's planning page, 56 public comments have been left in support of the plans, but more than 200 have objected.

The most recent public comment, dated December 23, pleaded: "Please regenerate that area.

"A new pub is what I want."

Several other supporters described the site as an "eyesore" and welcomed the plans to transform it.

The council rejected a previous Wetherspoon plan in 2018 to open on the site, citing various reasons including that it would "result in detrimental activity, noise and disturbance beyond existing levels without adequate mitigation".

According to the current planning application, the proposal has since been amended and redesigned based on that feedback.
