Wetherspoon's breakfasts for £2.24 as all pubs sign up to Eat Out to Help Out scheme

Wetherspoon's could be "cheaper than Tesco" as its pubs will be taking part in the Government half price food scheme to encourage people to eat out.

A spokesman from the chain told Mirror Money he could "confirm that all Wetherspoon pubs are participating" in the scheme.

The company said its hundreds of outlets across the UK will be offering a selection of meals, with a drink, at a lower price than buying from most supermarkets.

Under the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, a 50% discount will be available at participating restaurants and pubs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout August, to a maximum of £10 per head.

Wetherspoon's announced that, under the scheme, breakfasts in its pubs will cost £2.24, a pizza will be £2.75, other meals will be £2.37 and a children's meal will be £2.08.

The prices will be lower than comparable food bought at most supermarkets such as Tesco, it said.

Chairman Tim Martin said: "Thanks to the government scheme, an individual is £2.93 better off eating and drinking at Wetherspoons than purchasing a similar range of products at Tesco.

"Over a 13-day period customers would save £38.09. The vast majority of our pubs will be offering a range of meals, with a drink, at unbeatable prices."

The announcement from Martin comes a day after Tesco said they wouldn't be joining the Government scheme, but would cut prices on their own instead.

It means Tesco café's will be offering 50% off prices across the menu Monday-Wednesday throughout August - but with no £10 limit, you can take food away as well as eat on site and no taxpayer money is being used up.

Prices are impressive too - you can pick up a full English breakfast - at any time of day - for £2.07, a coffee for 75p, or a children's meal including a main, side and drink for £1.42.

A Tesco Finest British Beef Burger and chips will cost £3.05, while a Southern Fried Chicken Wrap with salad is priced at £1.85.
