Wet wipes recalled over fears about infection

Wet wipes are being recalled over fears they could be carrying infections. Company Vernacre has revealed a number of its wet wipes have been found to carry Pseudomonas Aeruginosa.

It has now issued a voluntary recall of products made at its Lancashire factory. The Office for Product Safety and Standards says the wipes are sold as Caremore, Countrywide, Fairfield, CHL, Fittleworth, CCN and Medirite brands.

A Government spokesman said: "The products present a risk of microbiological contamination due to the detection of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, which can cause infections in humans. The products do not meet the requirements of the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013."

The following wipes are being recalled:

Caremore Wet Wipes CMW100 2207-0016
CCN/Medirite Wet Wipe PH010N, PH010NN 2207-0042
CHL (Care Home Life) Large Wet Wipes PWIP0049 2206-0467
Countrywide Patient Cleansing Wipes (Moist Handi Wipes, Handy Wipe, Wet Wipe, Large Moist Body Wipes) NE0545, NE0505N, NE0546N, NE0546 2207-0047
Fairfield Wet Wipes and Moist Patient Wipes GNC31W and GNC31WN 2207-0048
Fittleworth Complementary Cleansing Wet Wipes FWW030, FWW030N 2206-0446

Distributors and consumers in possession of these products should not use them and should return them to Vernacare. This can be done by emailing product.safety@vernagroup.com.

The recall comes after the company halted the manufacture of a number of products in April after the issue was first identified. It also opted to withdraw a number of products from the healthcare market.

Rachel Downham, business unit director at Vernacare, said: "Although only a limited number of products lots are believed to be impacted, until our internal investigation has been completed, and root cause identified, we believe a full recall is the best course of action to limit any risk for vulnerable patients using these products."
