Wet-only pubs 'urgently' need an opening date, says Hospitality Ulster

Hospitality Ulster have urged the Northern Irish Executive to make a clear decision on the reopening of 'wet-only' pubs (meaning indoor pubs which don't serve food).

It comes as hundreds of bars were allowed to open at the weekend in Northern Ireland, but bars who don't serve food say they have been left in the dark over when they can reopen.

One bar manager from the Mid-Ulster area told Belfast Live that the lack of clarity amounted to "discrimination and inequality", and pleaded for more action.

She said: "It's now absolutely ridiculous that we don't have a date for reopening,  we are being ignored at every turn.

"There are going to be business closures and many redundancies. If no date is to be forthcoming, I'd ask if they could please explain why. And if not, are we to receive extra funding to compensate?"

Hospitality Ulster's Colin Neill said that the situation needed to be dealt with "urgently."

They said: "Once again we've had an Executive meeting and once again we have no date to reopen our non-food or 'wet-only' pubs indoors.

"This is a situation that needs dealt with urgently. Either the NI Executive steps up with financial support to keep these businesses afloat and to pay their staff the contributions to furlough at the end of July, or they bring forward the date."

Mr Neill also argued that any pub which does not follow the guidelines around reopening should face the full force of the law, but that it would be wrong to penalise the whole industry.

"If their concerns are round how these premises will behave, do not penalise a whole industry based on a perception. Open them, give them a date, and if anyone misbehaves - the full force of the law should come down on them and close them.

"We had what we regarded as a reasonably successful reopening of our restaurants and food pubs at the weekend. We didn't see images like we had in London, and we should not be based on them.

"I'm calling on the Executive: give us a date to reopen our indoor pubs, or give us financial support so that we can save our businesses and those jobs."

A Department of the Economy spokesperson replied to Belfast Live's request for a comment on this matter, saying:

“The date for the reopening of those pubs that sell alcohol only is a matter for the Executive. The reopening of these establishments will be considered as part of the wider review of the current restrictions at the earliest opportunity taking into account both the economic and health impacts. The Minister for the Economy has asked the Executive to consider this issue as soon as possible.

“The current guidance for reopening is available at via the website."
