East Kilbride fighter Jamieson aims to land British title shot

Boxer David Jamieson says a win in his eighth professional bout on Friday will cement a British title shot – but doesn’t yet have an opponent.

The Westwood fighter was due to fight Switzerland’s Benoit Huber at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but his opponent pulled out and he hasn’t yet got a replacement, as the news went to press.

Jamieson trusts promoter Sam Kynoch to sort him out, and says a win in London would put him in a mandatory position for a cruiserweight title shot.

The 29-year-old said: “This will cement me a top-10 ranking in Britain, and at that point the other boys at the top of the tree can’t run.

“If you’re in the top-10 you’re in a mandatory position to take a run at a British title. That’s when the boyhood dream comes true, that’s what the stories are all about.

“If I could win a Lonsdale belt that would be what it’s all been about for me since I started boxing.

"You hear about the guys when they retire saying ‘I did this, I did that’ but if you can win a British title you won’t need to tell anybody what you’ve done, it will be a recognised thing.

“If we get through this one there is stuff on the horizon – there’s another FightZone in January and they’re already matching us up on that.

“If I go down here and do good, there’s a good chance that [promoter] Dennis Hobson will sign me up on a three-fight deal, and that will tie us in, so we can look to push on for European titles and stuff like that.

“That’s the aim. That’s what it’s all about, that’s the deal.”

Jamieson says he feels everything is all up in the air for the moment, but expects it to be resolved well ahead of Friday.

He said: “It will be good to get down to the Big Smoke. It’s a change of opponent, which is still to be announced, and I’m still waiting to hear from Sam, but he says I will by close of play today (Tuesday).

“We’ve had a bit of trouble with guys pulling out. I was meant to fight a boy from Croatia, but he’s pulled out as well, so I’m waiting to hear.

“It’s last-chance saloon, isn’t it? I was meant to be fighting at Tower Bridge initially and then, due to Covid, a couple of boys pulled out on our card and they’ve amalgamated the two cards.

“It’s part of being professional, you’ve just got to crash on and not let it affect your preparations. It’s a great venue and it beats fighting in the miners’ welfares up here, doesn’t it!

“I’ve got a good wee crowd of about 20-30 people and a good few people that I know in London who will be coming along as well, so it will be nice to bring some folk with us.”

Jamieson also made a personal milestone when he married wife Michaela at the Strathaven Hotel last Friday.

The fighter joked that he’s already under pressure to make sure he has dates in January so they can go on honeymoon.

He said: “We got married last Friday at the Strathaven hotel and because I’m in a training camp we went up to Loch Lomond for a couple of nights, and then it was back down into the gym for 10 rounds of sparring.

“We’ll get this one out the road and maybe look at getting away sometime in January or something like that. With the FightZone coming up, the missus is already putting the screw on me, saying ‘you need to find out dates’ and stuff like that!”
