Wests Rosellas finally end losing streak

Wests coach Todd Lowrie said his side's first win of the season was a welcome reward for hard work after the Rosellas finally opened their account with an 18-4 victory over Wyong at Wyong.

Wests led 12-0 at halftime and restricted the Roos to just one try to Damon Goolagong midway through the second half on Saturday.

"I'm happy for the boys to finally get a reward for their efforts," Lowrie said. "Apart from the Maitland game which was horrible, we have been pretty competitive and it was a pretty happy dressingroom after the game."

Double: Experienced former Knight Tyler Randell scored two second half tries in Kurri's 24-16 win over the Lions.

Replacement hooker Fraser Price, who played the final 65 minutes, was among the players instrumental in the victory.

Maitland coach Matt Lantry claimed his side had been handed a big wake-up call after doing "everything we could to lose" before hanging on for a two point win in their Newcastle league clash against Macquarie at Maitland.

The Pickers scored early and seemingly had control of the game at halftime leading 14-4, but were made to work hard by a fighting Scorpions side who never stopped coming before securing a 20-18 win.

"We made 26 errors and made it extremely hard on ourselves in trying to put them away in the second half," Lantry said.

"They were good and kept coming and it was probably only our really strong try-line defence that proved the difference in the end. I was pleased with that aspect of our performance."

Lantry said his middle forwards, James Taylor, Jayden Butterfield and Sam Anderson, paved the way for the win.

"They were really strong for us," he said.

In other matches on Saturday, veteran Tyler Randell scored a second half double as the Kurri Bulldogs beat South Newcastle 24-16 while Cessnock proved too strong for The Entrance winning 28-22.

The Bulldogs and the Lions clash was a real arm-wrestled in the first 40 with the scores locked at 6-6 at half-time but Kurri skipped out to a 24-6 lead after Randell's double and a Kade Hardy try.

The Goannas were always in command against the Tigers, leading 16-6 at halftime and 28-6 before The Entrance crossed for three consolation tries in the final nine minutes.

In yesterday's only game, competition leaders Central Newcastle crushed Lakes United 48-10 with Mitch Williams scoring a hattrick in the demolition.

The Butchers were well on the way to winning at halftime leading 18-4 but went on with the job after the break with five of their eight tries coming in the second half.

Central centre Dom Murphy picked up two tries for the Butchers, both in the first half.
