Wests Leagues Balance will still not have key player Maddie Taylor when they take on minor premiers Souths in Newcastle championship netball at National Park on Saturday but coach Tracey Baggs has taken confidence from the opening-round performances of her other shooters.

Taylor cannot play due to restrictions placed on her by NSW Premier League club Central Coast Heart but Baggs was impressed by the goalscoring efforts of Rhiannon Stokes, Emma Prince and Tarsha Hawley in a 57-20 win over Kotara South last weekend.

"Rhiannon, Emma and Tarsha are further out shooters and still put a lot on the board last weekend, which was very encouraging," Baggs said.

Lions coach Tracey van Dal said maintaining intensity would be key after switching off in the second quarter of their 59-33 win over Inner Glow in round one.

"We identified a couple of issues from last Saturday's game that we need to improve on and have worked on that at training," van Dal said.

"We've got to keep our foot on the pedal. Against a team like Wests, we can't allow them any opportunity to make the most of our lack of concentration.

"We need to keep consistency throughout the game and cherish the ball a bit more, be a bit more patient with ball in hand."

Also in round two, Inner Glow play University, Kotara South go up against Nova Thunder and BNC Whanau take on Junction Stella.

All games are at 3.45pm.
