Weston-super-Mare 2019 General Election results - John Penrose secures huge Tory majority

Weston-super-Mare voters have re-elected the Conservatives’ John Penrose as their MP.

Mr Penrose, who was first sent into the House of Commons in 2005, claimed a total of 31,983 votes on a turnout of 67 per cent (55,869).

He improved on his 2017 total by around 2,000 votes and beat nearest rival Tim Taylor, of the Labour Party, by approximately 17,000 votes.

The result came on a night when prime minister Boris Johnson saw his party claim a commanding majority in an election which centred on Brexit.

Once the Weston declaration had been made at around 4.50am in the town’s Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Mr Penrose addressed those gathered at the count.

He said: “It’s been an important election, it’s been one of those elections which feels like it’s going to set the tone of this country for a while, so it really mattered - whichever side you were on.

“So thank you to everybody who took part and I promise that I will represent everybody as best as I possibly can - everybody, no matter who they voted for, I want to be an MP for everybody living locally.”

The constituency covers Weston itself, as well as the surrounding villages of Banwell, Blagdon, Bleadon, Burrington, Butcombe, Churchill, Congresbury, Hutton, Kewstoke, Locking, Loxton, St Georges, Wick St Lawrence and Winscombe and Sandford.

This year’s turnout was around the same as last year’s, which sat at 66.8 per cent.

Here are the full results from Weston-super-Mare:

John Penrose (Conservative): 31,983

Tim Taylor (Labour): 14,862

Patrick Keating (Liberal Democrat): 6,935

Susneil Basu (Greens):  1,834
