Weston-super-Mare man steals more than £60 worth of Lynx from Wilko

A Weston-super-Mare drug addict shoplifted more than £60 worth of Lynx deodorant.

Mark Adams, of Walliscote Road, stole a £25 can from the Wilko store in Sovereign Centre on November 27 last year.

The 43-year-old returned the following day and took £37 worth of Lynx, but was detained by security.

He admitted the two thefts at North Somerset Magistrates' Court yesterday (May 15) and was ordered to pay £130.

Prosecutor Nicole Miebai said: "He made a full and frank admission in his police interview.

"He said he was stealing the goods in order to buy food."

Adams has 22 offences of dishonesty on his record.

Representing himself, he told the court: "The amount of money I was getting at the time wasn't very much at all.

"I was struggling for food, though I am a drug addict as well."

He claims he no longer needs to steal because his benefits have recently risen to £900 per month, thanks to his Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The defendant added that he is engaging with the Addaction rehab service.

Presiding Justice Erica Imison handed down a conditional discharge, which will be active for two years.

Adams must pay £25 in compensation to Wilko for the Lynx can that was not recovered.

Ms Imison also imposed £85 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £20.
