Weston-super-Mare bus passengers evacuated as fire engulfs engine

Bus passengers had a dramatic end to 2021 after a fire broke out on the service they were travelling on.

People on board a bus in Weston-super-Mare had to be evacuated on New Year's Eve (Friday, January 31) after the vehicle's engine caught fire.

The driver brought the vehicle to a halt and managed to get everyone safely off before firefighters arrived to bring the blaze under control.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service shared brief details of the call-out on its website, confirming that it sent crews to a bus fire along The Runway in the North Somerset town.

Its statement read: "Crews from Weston were called to reports of smoke issuing from a double decker bus at 7.35am.

"On arrival, crews found a single decker bus with its engine on fire.

"Using one hose reel, a C02 extinguisher and thermal imaging camera, crews were able to extinguish the fire.

"The bus driver had evacuated all passengers prior to crews' arrival."

The cause of the fire was declared as accidental ignition.

The Runway bus stop is served by the number 51, but it is not yet clear if this is the service that was involved.

First Bus, which runs the 51, has been contacted for further information.
