Weston McKennie nearing Juventus exit after failed Leeds United switch

Weston McKennie is in talks over a summer switch to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, according to reports in both Italy and America. The former Leeds United midfielder is due to return to Juventus to begin pre-season shortly, but it seems he has no future at the Turin club.

As such, a summer move looks likely to be on the cards and after brief links with Roma, it seems Dortmund, who were pipped to the German title on the final day last time around, are keen to secure McKennie’s services. According to ESPN, talks are progressing between the two parties and with the German outfit keen to strengthen their midfield numbers following the sale of Jude Bellingham.

McKennie spent part of his childhood in Germany and began his playing career at Schalke, a stone’s throw away from Dortmund. The midfielder, then, may be keen to return to the country where he made his name to get his career back on track after a tough stint at Elland Road with Leeds.

The 24-year-old joined the Whites on loan last January in a move that at the time seemed to bring an end to his days at Juventus, with Leeds holding the option to sign him at the end of the season. However, he failed to find his feet in the Premier League and struggled to produce consistent form, despite making 20 appearances in all competitions.

Leeds were relegated at the end of the campaign and as a result, decided against making McKennie’s loan permanent. McKennie has spent three years with Juventus, making 65 appearances in all competitions, but it seems highly unlikely that he will be joining his international teammate Timothy Weah in the side next season as the Italian side look to offload a number of players.
