Westminster incident: Man shot dead by police Tasered after brandishing two knives

A man has been shot dead by police in Westminster in central London following an incident on Sunday night.

Armed responders used a Taser and a gun to stop the man after he produced two knives when challenged by officers, police said.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the incident took place at 11.25pm on Sunday and is "not being treated as terrorism".

A force statement said officers on patrol "noticed a man who they believed to be acting suspiciously" and when challenged "the man produced two knives".

He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time after the confrontation. No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

Officers said they came across the man in Great Scotland Yard, near Trafalgar Square.

Road closures are in place and officers remain at the scene with enquires into the circumstances ongoing.

A cordon is in place in Northumberland Avenue, according to reports from the scene.

London Ambulance Service attended but the man was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Directorate of Professional Standards and the IOPC has been informed, police have said.

Minutes after the incident, the force tweeted: "This is NOT being treated as a terrorist incident. Officers remain on scene and updates will follow. Road closures remain in place."

The police statement said: "Police officers were on patrol at around 23:25hrs on Sunday, 8 March when they noticed a man who they believed to be acting suspiciously.

"Armed officers responded. TASER and a police firearm were discharged during the incident.

"London Ambulance Service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene at Great Scotland Yard short time later.

"No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

"Enquiries into the circumstances remain ongoing.

"The incident is not being not being treated as terrorism.

"Road closures remain in place around the area.

"The Directorate of Professional Standards and the IOPC has been informed."
