Westminster council vows to take on idling supermarket delivery vans

Supermarkets face a crackdown after Westminster council today vowed to take on idling delivery vans.

Council leader Nickie Aiken said she would be increasing enforcement and fines after watching a Sainsbury’s van with its engine running for 15 minutes while it made deliveries.

Uber, Deliveroo and Amazon have already signed up to the council’s Don’t Be Idle campaign, where drivers pledge to turn off their engines when not moving. Fines are currently £80.

Ms Aiken said: “It’s not on to be contributing to deadly air pollution.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said the company is contacting the council leader to investigate the van she saw.
