Westminster Bridge: Man taken to hospital after landmark closed for ‘police incident’

Westminster Bridge closed this morning - (Jeremy Selwyn)

Westminster Bridge is closed following a large emergency services response in central London.

The landmark has been shut in both directions to traffic since around 2am on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police is yet to comment officially.

But it is believed to be related to mental health with no injuries reported. A man was treated at the scene and later taken to hospital.

London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 1.57am today August 18 to reports of an incident on Westminster Bridge, SW1.

“We sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, incident response officers and paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART).

“We treated a man at the scene and took him to hospital.

“A small number of resources remain on standby and we are working with our emergency services partners.

Dramatic images capture the empty River Thames crossing blocked by police cars and paramedics during rush hour.

Bus routes have been diverted and traffic alert systems suggest Westminster Bridge Road was shut for at least three hours.

Transport for London suggest this is due to an “emergency services incident” stretching from the A3211 Victoria Embankment to Lambeth Palace Road.

It urged drivers: “Use alternative routes.”
