Westminster Bridge crash: Tourists 'scream' as boat ploughs into bridge on Thames

A sightseeing boat full of tourists crashed into a bridge over the River Thames today.

The City Cruisers vessel ploughed into Westminster Bridge at around 4pm.

Authorities were called to aid its recovery and help passengers but it is thought no one was hurt.

Westminster Bridge, one of the oldest over the Thames in the capital, remains closed to traffic.

Footage taken in the aftermath of the crash shows part of a boat seemingly stuck under the structure.

"Just witnessed the top of this ferry get crushed and now stuck," one Twitter user wrote.

"Westminster bridge, crazy seeing the people scream and getting stuck under the bridge."

Another added: "Westminster Bridge damaged by a City Cruiser boat which got stuck earlier and now closed to traffic."

Met Police said: "Westminster Bridge is temporarily closed after a boat was involved in a collision with the bottom of the bridge.

"London Fire and the local authority are in attendance.

"No injuries. Thanks for your patience. This incident is not terror related."

A Westminster City Council spokesperson said: "The council is liaising with the emergency services after a boat collided with Westminster Bridge this afternoon. Our staff are on hand to provide assistance."

City Cruises, which runs sightseeing tours along the river through the central London, said a Millennium of Peace boat was involved.

Matthew Beckwith, director of the firm, said: "We can confirm that Millennium of Peace encountered mechanical failure today just before 16.00pm, and due to the rising tide the vessel made contact with Westminster Bridge.

"Millennium of Peace was towed to Mill Bank pier with all passengers onboard to disembark. We apologise to all passengers involved for the impact on their experience and any inconvenience caused."

London Fire Brigade has also been approached for comment.

Westminster Bridge connects Westminster with Lambeth.

The Grade II listed structure is 820 feet long with seven spans.

Opened in 1862, it is one of central London's oldest bridges over the Thames.
