Westmeath secondary school closes and classes moved online after Covid outbreak

A secondary school in Co Westmeath is closed to all students for the next few days after a Covid-19 outbreak.

Parents of children at St Finian's in Mullingar were told on Sunday that classes would be moving online for the week per guidance from the HSE.

The mixed school has over 600 students, all of which will be learning remotely until Wednesday at the earliest.

A message to parents said: "In light of a number of cases of Covid affecting the school and having consulted with public health, it is with regret the board of management has decided to close the school for Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13.

"All classes will be held on Google classroom as per student timetable."

A further update is to be given to parents later today.

The Irish Mirror contacted St Finian's, who don't wish to make any further comment at this time as they await HSE guidance.

In another update to parents on their Facebook page the school said: "Classes this morning are online as per parent notification yesterday. Please contact secretary@stfinianscollege.ie with updated contact details if you did not receive any message."
