Westmeath road sealed off as Garda rushed to hospital following serious crash

Two people, including an on-duty Garda, have been rushed to hospital after a serious crash overnight.

The N4 in Westmeath is closed near Mullingar this morning after the serious crash involving a Garda car and another vehicle.

The collision happened at 3:30am with emergency services remaining at the scene this morning.

Both the member of the Gardai and the occupant of the other vehicle were brought to Midlands Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí attended the scene of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles that occurred at approximately 3:30am on Thursday, 10th December, 2020 on the N4 at Ballinafid, County Westmeath.

"The road traffic collision involved an official Garda vehicle driven by a member of An Garda Síochána . The Garda member and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, with non-life threatening injuries.

"There were no other persons involved in the collision. The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission were notified of this collision in accordance with Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 and attended the scene. An Garda Síochána continue to investigate the Road Traffic Collision."
