Westlink car fire: PSNI close road and warn of long delays

A car on fire on the Westlink caused long delays as police closed part of the road while firefighters dealt with the incident.

Just after 3pm on Saturday afternoon, September 4, emergency services were called to the A12 Westlink, M1 bound, following reports of a car on fire.

Video footage from the scene shows the black car on fire and long tailbacks. Small explosions can be heard from the vehicle.

In a statement on social media, the PSNI said: "Motorists are advised of long delays on the Westlink, country bound, due to a vehicle on fire. Please proceed with caution."

They later added: "Motorists are advised that the Westlink, country bound, is now closed due to a vehicle on fire. Please seek an alternative route for your journey."

At 3.15pm on Saturday, TrafficWatch NI, said the Westlink, close to the Royal Victoria Hospital, was closed heading to the M1 / Broadway, due to the car fire.

The road was later reopened.
