Westlink Belfast 'closed as emergency services deal with ongoing incident'

A busy Belfast road has been closed as emergency services deal with a serious incident.

It is understood the M1 citybound at the A12 Westlink towards York Street is now closed and M1 J1 Broadway traffic is being diverted onto Broadway roundabout.

One witness said police, fire crews and the ambulance services are all at the scene.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "We’re currently dealing with a serious incident on the A12 Westlink, and have had to close the Westlink and the M1 on approach to this. Avoid the area if possible. We’re aware of the delays this causes - both roads will be re-opened as soon as possible."

In an updated statement, a PSNI spokeswoman added: "Drivers are advised the Westlink in Belfast is currently closed in both directions as police tend to a person in distress. We are aware of lengthy tailbacks, and would urge motorists to seek an alternative route if possible."
