Westlife star tells shocking story of how Leeds United saved him from Harehills muggers

Westlife's two huge shows in Leeds this week saw the band - celebrating 20 years in the industry - perform at the Leeds First Direct Arena for the first time.

But for one of the foursome, the gigs meant a return to the city that was once a home from home.

Singer Nick Byrne moved to Leeds in 1995 and was signed by Leeds United as a goalkeeper. He was part of the FA Youth Cup winning squad 1997.This was of course all before Westlife even formed.

Nick was back in his native Ireland when he attended an audition for Louis Walsh's new boyband. The rest is history.

During Monday night's show, Nick didn't hesitate to remenisce with the crowds on his time in Leeds, before telling the story about how he was almost mugged in Harehills one day - and how his time with Leeds United actually saved him.

Scroll up to watch Nick tell the story to the crowd at Leeds Arena

He begins by telling fans where he used to live in Roundhay, and how he would catch the bus to Harehills to get to a cash machine. Only one time, after getting cash out, he was surrounded by a group of suspicious looking men and knew he was 'about to get done'.

Watch the video to hear how he managed to escape. He even thanks the likes of Eddie Grey - a coach at the time Nick was at the club - for his influence!
