Westlife star Nicky Byrne shares brilliant throwback to his time playing with Leeds United

Westlife star Nicky Byrne has shared a brilliant throwback picture of his time between the sticks for Leeds United.

Before becoming a singer in the famous pop band, the Dubliner was on the books of the Yorkshire club and was part of a FA Youth Cup-winning team.

Perhaps the pinnacle of his football career, though, was when he made the matchday squad for Leeds' Premier League clash with Southampton at the Dell in 1995.

Sharing a picture of the teamsheet for that trip on Twitter today, Byrne wrote: "Leeds Utd fans out there, this is one great memory. Here is the teamsheet for the Premier league game v Southampton at The Dell 1995.

"I was named in squad and travelled. I was 16, just two months out of school. I took this off the wall in Elland Road!"

Goalkeeper Byrne was part of a squad that also included the likes of Irish compatriot Gary Kelly, Gary McAllister, Tony Yeboah and the late Gary Speed.

Now a part of one of the most successful musical groups of all time, Byrne still wants to get his hands on his old jersey that he had to give back to Leeds United.

He joked: "Sadly I never did get to keep my jersey at the end of the season. I think the number on back would have read BYRNE 36. If anyone has it in their attic! You know where I am."
