Westfield Stratford car park fire: Ten cars destroyed and shoppers evacuated as 'engine fault' sparks huge blaze

Ten cars were destroyed and a further ten damaged as a huge fire in a multi-storey car park at Westfield Stratford sparked the evacuation of the shopping centre.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it was called to the shopping centre on Montfichet Road just after 4pm on Saturday.

Around ten vehicles were destroyed by fire, with a further ten vehicles sustaining varying amounts of damage as a result of heat spread, the LFB said in an update on Monday.

A “significant amount of smoke”, was caused by the blaze on the second floor of car park C, producing a spokesperson said.

The centre was evacuated as a precaution while firefighters tackled the blaze. The fire was brought under control by 5.54pm.

The fire is being treated as accidental and believed to have been caused by an undetermined fault within the engine compartment of a diesel-powered car, the LFB said.

About 70 firefighters and ten fire engines from Stratford, Poplar, Leytonstone and surrounding stations were sent to the scene. A 32-metre (105ft) turntable ladder was used to help extinguish the flames.

Shoppers described being told to leave in a hurry. One person wrote on X: “Parked up in Westfield car park had security run up to us and tell us to leave straight away through fire exits — could hear bangs on the way down.”

Another wrote that they had heard explosions coming from the car park.
