The rush for Black Friday bargains boosted footfall at Westfield’s two London centres — in White City and Stratford — by 7% to 910,000 over the weekend, it emerged on Tuesday.

Owner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield — formed out of a takeover of the shopping centres owner by a European commercial property business last year — also said that Stratford had attracted a record 50 million visitors in the last year. That was up from 49.5m in the prior 12 months.

The landlord said the East London destination has now welcomed more than 323 million visitors since its opening in 2011, generating retail sales of more than £7.4 billion.

Michel Dessolain, chief operating officer Europe for Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, said: “It is fitting that a destination at the heart of the Olympic legacy story continues to break records."

He added: "Expectations for future growth are very strong with an estimated £22 billion to be invested by 2027 bringing more retail, homes and offices, as well as cultural and learning institutions, to the area.”
