Western, Eastern styles go head-to-head

A series of paintings epitomising the diverse cultures and historical anecdotes of iconic figures in various eras are displayed during "Retrospective" at Number 1 Gallery at River City Bangkok, Charoen Krung, until Saturday.

The paintings were created by Jirapat Tatsanasomboon, the only artist from Thailand who was featured in the book 100 Painters Of Tomorrow, published by Thames & Hudson, and had an opportunity to showcase his work alongside Andy Warhol in the "15 Minutes Eternal" exhibition at the Art Science Museum in Singapore.

Internationally acclaimed for his artistic endeavours, Jirapat's main expertise lies in his ability to use a unique narration technique to convey stories in ancient paintings that are re-interpreted in a pop-art style that incorporates the contrast between Western and Thai arts.

His works are divided into three eras. The first era illustrates the encounter between Western and Eastern art. The concept is presented through Thai characters from the ancient literary work of Ramakien and Western comic heroes.

The second era portrays the integration of Thai paintings with those by internationally acclaimed artists namely Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana and Piet Mondrian. Selected iconic Thai characters are featured to reflect the satirical and comical interpretations of social and political situations involving justice, equality and values of humanity.

For the last era, the artist portrays the harmony of diverse cultures through the juxtaposition of Western artists' masterpieces from the Renaissance to the present time and Thai paintings to record current events including the Covid-19 situation.

Number 1 Gallery at River City Bangkok is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12-7pm.
