Fire near Westerleigh Crematorium: 100 tonnes of smouldering hay being monitored

Fire crews remain at the scene of a fire near Westerleigh Crematorium this morning (February 9) as they monitor around "100 tonnes of smouldering hay". Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called to the barn fire at 11.48am yesterday and closed Leigh Lane soon after.

In a recent update, the fire service said that two fire engines remained at the scene overnight to monitor the situation. It was reported yesterday that 14 cows were moved to safety following the outbreak of the fire.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Two fire engines have remained on the scene throughout the night and continue to monitor approximately 100 tonnes of smouldering hay. We will continue to have a presence at the incident to monitor the situation."

A total of nine pumps were used by crews from Hicks Gate, Yate, Patchway, Temple and Bath as they tackled the blaze yesterday. Crews said they found the barn "well alight" and also deployed two 45mm jets to extinguish the flames.

Leigh Lane, just next to Westerleigh Crematorium, was closed in both directions due to the fire yesterday. It has since reopened.
