Wester Hailes Education Centre to open to Edinburgh pupils as normal on Monday following fire

Wester Hailes Education Centre is set to open to all pupils on Monday, despite a "significant" blaze at the high school.

Fire crews, including several fire engines, raced to the secondary school on Murrayburn Drive at around 8pm on Friday night (13 March).

It took much of the night to get the fire, which is believed to have broken out in a cupboard, under control.

Speaking to PA, a local resident and former pupil at the school said it appeared to be "badly damaged".

"I was devastated, and the fact that my little brother still goes to the school and the exams are just around the corner", they added.

While council leader Adam McVey has confirmed that the school will open as normal on Monday, all leisure activities aside from the swimming pool have been suspended until further notice.

He said: "Wester Hailes Education Centre will be open to all pupils on Monday.

"Swimming pool operating as normal this weekend, all other leisure facilities postponed until further notice - damage confined to one school games hall, thanks to @fire_scot for swift response last night."

No one was injured in the fire.

Police say two teenagers have been charged in connection with the incident and are due to appear in court.
